How To Cure Nappy Rash

Generally, nappy rash is caused by contact with either urine or faeces, which makes the skin produce less protective oil and therefore provide a less effective barrier to further irritation. Friction may also exacerbate this distressing condition, which can be very painful and may make your baby irritable and prone to waking up during the night.

Conventional Remedies

  • Change diaper as soon as it becomes wet or soiled. Use a barrier cream such as zinc oxide, which will protect your baby's bottom from contact with faeces or urine.
  • Swap to reusable napkin. Disposable napkins may be too tight or unbreathable for baby's skin.
  • Use mild or organic cleaning agent for the reusable napkins.
  • Avoid using soap on your baby's private area.
  • Do not use baby powder to soothe the inflammation. Some baby powder contains mineral ingredients which may worsen the problem.
Herbal Remedies
  • Rub a little calendula ointment or oil on to cleaned nappy area to soothe and to reduce inflammation.
  • A drop of lavender or rose oil in a peach kernel carrier oil can be gently rubbed into the nappy area. Use this to protect against nappy rash as well as heal it.
  • A drop of oregano or thyme oil in a light carrier oil, such as olive oil, can be used to discourage thrush.

If problem persists within a week, quickly consult a doctor. Some problem are results of overly sensitive skin. Rashes that are accompanied by white patches, sores, red spots or yellow spots are usually signs of underlying problems that requires medical investigation.
